Overview
Introduction
The proliferation of the use of the word ‘trauma’ in a wide range of contexts has caused confusion for many. This workshop aims to unravel this through a grounded, critical introduction to trauma-informed work. Participants will learn to differentiate between established concepts, emerging theories and popularised claims. They will feel more confident in working with trauma in a safe, ethical and appropriately paced way.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Use shared evidence-informed language to talk about trauma safety and nervous system regulation within their professional role and organisation
- Make more informed judgements about when to prioritise safety stabilisation and pacing in work with trauma-exposed individuals and when to seek additional training or referrals
- Recognise signs of heightened or dysregulated nervous system states in themselves and others, and respond in ways that reduce risk and support regulation within the boundaries of their role
- Apply trauma-informed principles, including choice, collaboration and ethical pacing, to everyday professional interactions, decision-making and learning environments
- Engage critically with trauma-related models and claims, allowing them to adopt useful ideas without over-generalisation or uncritical application
- Reflect on their own professional limits and responsibilities, supporting safety practice and reducing the risk of overreach or inadvertent harm
