Overview

Introduction

Anxiety is a universal human experience, but when it becomes overwhelming, it can significantly disrupt daily life. This intensive two‑day masterclass is designed to deepen participants’ confidence and skill in helping clients understand, manage and reduce anxiety using evidence‑based Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) within a CBT framework. It is a practical and engaging workshop.

Through a blend of theory, live demonstrations and hands‑on skills practice, you will learn how to work collaboratively with clients to:

  • Identify patterns of thinking that trigger and maintain anxiety
  • Challenge and restructure anxiety‑provoking beliefs
  • Support clients in applying new, more helpful thinking in real‑life situations
Content

Foundations

  • The core theory and philosophy underpinning REBT (CBT) and how it conceptualises anxiety and its maintenance

Assessment and Formulation

  • Working collaboratively with clients to identify the thinking styles that fuel their anxiety

Intervention Skills

  • Challenging and restructuring unhelpful thinking using REBT techniques
  • Negotiating and designing effective homework tasks that help clients generalise learning into everyday life

Working with Challenges

  • Understanding and managing resistance
  • Troubleshooting common obstacles

Maintaining Progress

  • Relapse prevention planning — supporting clients to sustain and build on the gains they’ve made

Expert Course Facilitator

Paula Lawlor

Paula Lawlor, MA, Dip. REBT, MSc in Pluralistic Counselling and Psychotherapy
Paula is a chartered psychologist and cognitive behavioural psychotherapist. She
holds a BA and an MA degree in psychology as well as a professional qualification in
REBT (the first form of CBT). She studied under Windy Dryden (Professor of Counselling,
Goldsmiths College, University of London) and has been in private practice for 21
years. She is a founding member of the Institute for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
(ICBT).
