Overview

Introduction

Supervision is viewed as a key component of many professions, providing support to practitioners, enhancing ongoing learning and, to a greater or lesser extent, protecting the public. This year-long course is intended for people from a variety of disciplines who are intending, beginning or already practising supervisors. Professionally accredited by the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), it is designed to enable individuals to extend their understanding and knowledge of supervision, incorporating theoretical inputs with opportunities for group discussion and experiential exercises.

This course will be of interest to professionals who work in an integrative manner. It will be of particular interest to counsellors, psychotherapists, guidance counsellors, psychologists, healthcare professionals, probation officers, social services personnel, managers and all who supervise the work of others in the helping professions.

Overview

This is a part-time course and will cover topics and activities such as:

  • Definitions and purpose of supervision
  • Models of the supervisory process, including those of Page and Wosket and Hawkins and Shohet
  • Learning styles
  • Feedback-informed supervision
  • Consideration of supervisors’ training development and supervisory needs
  • Opportunities to role-play in triads as supervisor, supervisee and observer, using participants’ own case work
  • Exploration of transference, countertransference and the parallel process
  • Reflection on the similarities and differences of supervision in a one-to-one, group or organisational context
  • Consideration of multicultural, ethical and professional issues
Blended Learning Delivery

This programme is delivered via blended learning, whereby students rotate between onsite and online. Onsite classes take place in our Tallaght campus. Our blended learning classes are run as tutorials, which involve students and their lecturer logging in to our online learning platform and using Zoom simultaneously.

Zoom provides an integrative online environment for students and lecturers to interact and engage in learning. It facilitates discussion polls, slide sharing, videos, resource sharing and much more. To foster more intimate learning environments, breakout rooms are also used, enabling safe, experiential triadic learning.

All our sessions are accessible on computers and mobile devices, and our dedicated IT department supports faculty and students throughout their online learning journey. To promote flexibility and best practice, all sessions are recorded and made accessible exclusively to students enrolled in the class for review at their convenience.

Student Benefits and Support

With IACP recognition, graduates of this programme (who meet IACP criteria) are eligible for accreditation as supervisors. Learners are supported in developing the necessary skills, knowledge and competencies to practise as supervisors.

Assessment

Learners are assessed through a continuous assessment strategy that includes a variety of methods, such as video recording, theoretical essays and reflective writing. Clinical course requirements involve engagement in a peer supervision (internal) relationship (25 hours), external supervision practice (25 hours) and clinical supervision of external supervision practice hours.

Validation and Accreditation

This diploma is professionally accredited by IACP. To meet IACP supervision accreditation requirements, learners must be fully accredited counselling and psychotherapy members and hold full accreditation for at least five years.

Duration

This course is one year in duration, including 13 teaching days, with additional time for completing clinical hours.

IICP College understands that while partaking in further education is an incredibly rewarding experience, it can also be a financial challenge for some learners. To minimise the financial impact, we strive to keep course fees as competitive as possible. We also offer payment plan options to help learners pay the balance of their fees over the duration of their course.

Cost

€1,950

  • An application processing fee of €100 also applies.
  • Places are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis following interviews.
  • Upon receiving a course offer, a 30% deposit of the programme fee is required to secure your place.
Additional Requirements and Costs

Learners are required to contract with an external supervisor, who will supervise their 25 external supervision practice hours at a ratio of 1:5. Therefore, learners will be required to attend at least 5 sessions of external supervision. Clinical supervision can cost from €40 per session upwards. Fees are negotiable between learners and individual supervisors.

Protection for Enrolled Learners

This programme is covered by arrangements under Section 65(4) of the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 whereby, in the event of IICP College ceasing to provide the programme for any reason, enrolled learners may transfer to a similar programme at another provider, or in the event that this is not possible, the fees most recently paid will be refunded. Current PEL arrangements consist of a 2% levy on course fees. IICP College does not pass the cost of this on to learners.
