The course supports practitioners in developing informed, non-judgmental and client-centred approaches to substance-related work.

Overview

Introduction

This course provides participants with a basis for developing their therapeutic understanding of the theoretical and clinical considerations of substance use. It aims to increase their knowledge of substance use issues, including pharmacology, aetiology and interventions appropriate to this clinical cohort.

Substance use in Ireland is on the rise. According to the Health Research Board (2020), 7% of respondents have used an illegal drug in the past year and one in five drinkers has an alcohol use disorder. Substance use in Ireland is on the rise, and those who wish to work with clients in distress must understand the issue and be armed with interventions that are unique to treating it.

Who Should Apply

Applicants will have a Level 8 degree in the helping professions or a Level 7 degree in the helping professions with relevant work experience.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will hold a Level 8 degree in the helping professions (including counselling, psychotherapy, social care, social work, psychology, psychiatric nursing, mental health and addiction). Those who hold a Level 7 degree in the helping professions with appropriate, relevant work experience may be eligible to apply under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Minimum Technological Requirements

You will need to have:

  • Adequate broadband for uploading and downloading
  • A desktop computer or laptop capable of using Zoom
  • A webcam and microphone
  • A web browser
  • Word processing package

This course offers a focused, evidence-informed approach to working with substance-using clients, combining theoretical understanding with practical clinical skills. Learners will develop greater confidence in assessment, engagement and intervention strategies while strengthening their ethical and reflective practice.

As a QQI Level 8 minor award, it provides recognised academic accreditation while enhancing professional competence and ability to respond effectively to the complex needs of this client group.

Overview

This course is delivered via blended learning with two days on-site at our Tallaght campus and two days online via Zoom.

The core syllabus includes the following themes:

  • Drug classification and pharmacology
  • Aetiological understandings of addiction, including behavioural and disease models
  • Societal and individual attitudes towards those impacted by substance use/addiction and the consequences of prejudicial and discriminatory values
  • Models of intervention:
    • Assessment of substance use
    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with substance-using clients
    • Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) with substance-using clients
    • Motivational interviewing with substance-using clients
    • Abstinence models with substance-using clients
  • Harm reduction with substance-using clients
  • The Wheel of Change
  • Dual disorders

Duration

There are 28 hours of class contact time, plus additional self-directed learning (SDL). SDL is left to learners’ discretion. It can include time spent preparing for classes and deliberate practice with peers. Learners who wish to obtain the Level 8 minor award will be required to write an assignment, so SDL will apply here.
