Module Overview: Skills: Going Back to Basics

(Emphasis on the Use of Self and Relational Depth)

This module offers a focused return to the foundational skills that underpin effective therapeutic practice, with particular attention to the therapist’s use of self and the creation of relational depth. Designed as a reflective and experiential CPD opportunity, the module supports practitioners in re-grounding their work in core therapeutic principles while enhancing confidence, intentionality, and presence in the room.

Participants will revisit essential skills; attending, observing, reflecting, and responding; while deepening their understanding of how therapist authenticity, self-awareness, and moment-to-moment responsiveness shape the therapeutic relationship. Through discussion, demonstration, skills practice, and guided self-reflection, therapists will develop a more nuanced, ethical, and intentional use of:

  • Use of Self
  • Therapeutic Self-Disclosure
  • Immediacy
  • Meta-Therapeutic Communication
  • Core Attending and Relational Skills

This one-day interactive workshop offers participants the opportunity to engage in practice of both core counselling skills as well as more intermediate and creative skills. It will consist of both lecture-led and peer practice sessions and will appeal to practitioners looking to refresh their skills as well as those from other disciplines looking to gain core skills to complement their work.

  • Opening (including setting goals) and Closing a session
  • Reflection of feeling and content
  • Immediacy
  • Use of Imagery and metaphors
