History of IICP
The Institute of Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy (IICP) was established in 2003 to provide a comprehensive training service for those who wish to pursue professional and academic accreditation in the mental health services. The programmes encompass a multicultural and pluralistic approach with a core philosophical framework reflecting the principles and practices of Choice Theory/Reality Therapy, Person Centred Counselling and Multicultural Counselling and Therapy. The Diploma Programme was awarded Recognition Status by the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy in 2006.
Over the last number of years the Institute has actively engaged in enhancing the programme with the goal of gaining academic validation as an honours degree. In May 2010 a panel of international academic and professional experts in the field was appointed to examine the programme of study. The result of this process is that the panel recommended that the programme be validated as a level 8 (Hons) Degree. On the 20th of September 2010 institutional approval and programme validation was formally approved by the HETAC Council. The panel noted areas for commendation within IICP, namely:
Teamwork
The teamwork of all at IICP/VCS is evident. It is clear that there is a cohesive and collaborative team, which is organic and deserving of special commendation.
Students
It is clear that all in IICP model the empathy that is taught to the students. The training experience is almost a therapeutic process for the learners. The panel found this remarkable.
Library
The library and listed bibliography are impressive and are a good indication of the evolving structures of IICP.
Placement
The panel also mentioned the organisation of the placements. They considered that it was very clear that a great deal of work goes into this element of the training.
Premises
The panel considered that the premises were exceptional. The fact that the Institute is sited within a local community designated as disadvantaged was noteworthy. It is commendable that IICP has continued to respond to local needs.
Leadership:
The panel felt that a special commendation should go to the Director who has shown extraordinary leadership. They considered that a great deal has been invested in bringing the project to its present stage and it is the result of her vision and sacrifice. The panel felt that it was important to single out the Director for particular mention and commendation.
We are very proud of the commendations noted by the panel of experts. We believe that as we continue to develop our programmes on offer in collaboration with HETAC, IACP, staff and our student cohort that we can continue to provide a centre of excellence in the field of counselling and psychotherapy which will enhance mental health service provision in Ireland.
